Abstract
Gemifloxacin, a compound of the fluoroquinolone, is a broad-spectrum oral antibacterial agent. The most common adverse effects of fluoroquinolones are gastrointestinal manifestations and incidence of cutaneous adverse effects is 0.7%. IgE mediated hypersensitivity reactions have been reported with fluoroquinolones. Until now gemifloxacin- induced anaphylaxis has been rarely reported. We experienced a case of gemifloxacin-induced hypersensitivity reaction confirmed by nonirritant intradermal testing. A 39-year-old woman took gemifloxacin for an acute bronchitis. Five days later, she developed generalized urticaria with fever, abdominal pain, and dyspnea. She continuously took gemifloxacin for 13 days before admission. Indradermal test showed positive finding to gemifloxacin. Because of cross- reactivity between fluoroquinolones, she was educated to avoid other kinds of the fluoroquinolone.
